“We have no idea what’s coming from where.”

A UK retailer told us that this year. They were not alone.

A third (33%) of the UK businesses we spoke to about paid media between June and October 2026 said they can’t trust or prove their numbers. It was the most common complaint we heard.

Google’s AI Mode ads reach the UK in Q4 2026. They will make that problem harder to solve.

What Google announced about AI Mode ads

On 28 October 2026, Google said it is bringing ads in AI Mode to more countries.

  • Ads in AI Mode are now scaling in 10 countries, including Australia, Canada, and India.
  • The UK, Brazil, and Mexico follow in Q4 2026.
  • In the US, Google launched “multiturn ads”. These show on AI Mode’s answers to follow-up questions.
  • Every ad carries a “Sponsored” label.

Google backed the move with two figures. AI Mode queries are three times longer than traditional searches (Google AI Mode Report, US, May 2026).

And click-through rates for sponsored and organic product listings in AI Mode are “already similar” (Google internal data, US, 20 Aug to 3 Sep 2026).

Both figures are Google’s own. Both are US only.

What the industry is saying

The same day, Alphabet reported its Q3 results. On the call, Google’s chief business officer, Philipp Schindler, mentioned “the lower monetization we were seeing in AI Mode”.

In other words, AI Mode ads earn Google less than classic search ads, for now. Google is scaling them anyway.

Search Engine Roundtable’s Barry Schwartz questioned the click-through claim. Google’s figure covers product listings.

He asked whether plain text ads will do as well as visual product results.

Earlier data on ads in AI Overviews shows how much placement inside AI answers matters. Seer Interactive found paid CTR on queries with AI Overviews fell 68%, from June 2024 to September 2025. Brands cited in the AI Overview got 91% more paid clicks than those that were not.

That study covers AI Overviews, not AI Mode. It is still the best guide to where UK clicks may go.

How AI Mode ads work in Google Ads

Google’s help page sets out the rules.

  1. You don’t opt in. Existing Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns are automatically eligible.
  2. You can’t opt out. You can’t target AI Mode on its own. You can’t switch it off separately from Search.
  3. You won’t see it on its own line. AI Mode traffic is counted inside your normal impressions, clicks, conversions, and cost.
  4. You pay the same way. The same auction and the same cost-per-click or conversion-based bidding apply.
  5. Google may write words around your ad. Some placements carry Gemini-written “AI explainers”. You can’t write, edit, approve, or opt out of them.

Which campaigns reach AI Mode

There is no AI Mode campaign to build. Turning on AI Max doesn’t let you pick AI Mode as a placement either (Search Engine Land).

Your ads get there through three routes.

  • Performance Max. It serves Shopping and text ads from your feed and assets, and can match to the full conversation.
  • Shopping. Product listings are the format behind Google’s click-through claim, so your feed does the selling.
  • Broad match Search, including AI Max for Search. These can match to the question and to Google’s AI answer.

Exact and phrase match only reach the direct query. Google is testing them in AI Mode where intent is clear and direct.

For now, Performance Max, Shopping, and broad match carry most of the reach.

Many UK accounts were moved onto AI Max on 1 September 2026, when broad match and auto-created asset campaigns upgraded automatically. Those campaigns will be first in line.

The ad formats you will see

  • Product listings from Shopping and Performance Max.
  • Text ads inside or below the AI answer, labelled “Sponsored”.
  • Multiturn ads on follow-up answers. US only for now.
  • Formats in testing, such as Highlighted Answers inside recommendation lists, and Conversational Discovery ads where Gemini writes the creative (Search Engine Land).

New traffic will arrive in your account this quarter. It will be blended into the numbers you already report. And you will have no switch to turn it off.

If your Google Ads, GA4, and sales figures already disagree, this makes the gap harder to find. We wrote about the same measurement problem on the organic side after Google I/O 2026.

How we set campaigns up for AI Mode ads

Performance Max, Shopping, and broad match carry most of the reach. We put our work there.

Our aim is to let Google find new questions while you control what you pay for.

Performance Max: build it around your profitable products

  • Split campaigns by objective, product range, and margin. This keeps profitable products and loss-making products on separate budgets.
  • Add custom labels to your feed for margin, best sellers, and category. Set each campaign’s budget by what it returns.
  • Exclude products that sell at a loss.
  • Use brand exclusions where practical. This stops Performance Max taking credit for people who already search for you.
  • Give it strong audience signals. Put past purchasers first.
  • Fill every headline, long headline, and description slot. This gives Google your own words to use.

Broad match and AI Max: explore within limits

  • Run broad match in separate campaigns with capped budgets. These campaigns find new questions at a set spend.
  • Sort search terms into three groups: keep, test, and exclude. Move proven terms into phrase and exact campaigns.
  • Add negative keywords as soon as poor terms appear. Long AI Mode questions will make this list grow.
  • Check what AI Max changes. Text customisation can rewrite your ads. Final URL expansion can send people to pages you did not choose. When URL expansion is on, Google ignores pinned assets. We covered this in our Marketing Live write-up.
  • Send each type of question to the ad and landing page that answers it best.

Shopping: your feed is your ad

  • Write product titles that include what people ask about, such as size, material, and use.
  • Keep prices and stock accurate. This makes the AI answer and your page agree.
  • Manage Shopping as a growth channel of its own. Segment it by margin and best sellers.

Exact and phrase match still matter. They give tight control of your proven terms while the broad match campaigns explore.

Six checks before AI Mode ads reach the UK

1. Make your numbers agree now

Make Google Ads, GA4, and your sales data agree before AI Mode traffic arrives. Check each conversion action.

Check the value that each action carries. After the new traffic arrives, an old tracking fault and a new traffic source will look the same.

Our analytics team can help. The team audits, fixes, and maintains GA4 and conversion tracking.

2. Record a baseline this month

Record your cost per click, conversion rate, cost per order, and sales per £1 for each campaign. Do this now, while your account has no UK AI Mode traffic.

Without a baseline, you cannot tell what changed or when.

3. Watch your search terms for long questions

Google says AI Mode queries are three times longer. These queries will appear in your search terms report.

Look for long, conversational terms. Judge each term on the sales and margin it earns.

4. Use the controls you still have

Negative keywords and brand exclusions still apply. Review them for your broad match, AI Max, and Performance Max campaigns.

Do this before the end of Q4.

5. Fix your product feed

Google’s only click-through evidence is about product listings. If you sell online, your Shopping feed controls how your products appear.

Check titles, prices, and stock.

6. Judge new traffic on what it earns

Platform ROAS will tell you that AI Mode looks fine. Your bank balance may tell you something different.

Measure sales after shipping, fees, returns, and discounts.

We made this case at Marketing Live 2026, when Google moved more levers inside its own platform: don’t let Google mark its own homework. AI Mode ads are the next step.

Not on their own line. Google counts AI Mode impressions, clicks, conversions, and cost inside your existing campaign reports. (source)

How are AI Mode ads different from ads in AI Overviews?

How we handle changes like this

Before we change a single bid, we check that Google Ads, GA4, and your sales data agree. Then we agree a profit floor with you.

Miss our agreed profit floor for one month and you can leave.

That matters more when Google adds placements you can’t see or switch off. You are not locked in while we find out what they earn.

Your ad accounts and data stay yours. Get your free paid search audit, or invite us to pitch.

Summary

Google’s AI Mode ads reach the UK in Q4 2026. They run through your existing campaigns, with no opt-out and no separate report. Six checks to run first.
